Norskies Update and Preseason Schedule

Thief River Falls, MN | The Thief River Falls Norskies of the Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL) has released the first four games of it’s 2017 pre-season schedule today.

Starting with the Goose Cup series against the Winkler Flyers on September 8th the club will use these games to tweak it’s opening day roster.

“It’s important to get a few competitive games under our belt as we hit our league schedule, these will be tough opponents from the Manitoba Junior Hockey League and will get our group ready for the SIJHL grind,” stated general manager Kevin McCallum.

The Norskies 2016 inaugural season was filled with a lot of firsts, such as the first Goose Cup which was swept by the Winkler Flyers of the MJHL. The team rebounded from those games to finish with a respective 30 wins on their first season in the Canadian Junior Hockey League.

“Our first year in the CJHL was a huge success and a huge learning curve for all of us in the program. With everyone having a first year under the belt we are excited for year 2. To have the season we did (30 wins and a playoff berth) with the young team we had I think next year will be nothing short of a very successful season,” said coach Cole Workman.

Recruitment is in full swing with the staff seeking talent from California, Colorado, Minnesota, North Dakota, Illinois, Wisconsin, Texas, Nebraska as well as across Canada.

“Recruitment is going well for the program, year two is a little easier than year one was, the brand of the Norskies and the CJHL/SIJHL is starting to become known,” remarked head scout Michael Hughes. “Our scouts are recommending many quality players, two weeks ago we were in Denver at the CCM Showcase and interviewed with over 55 players seeking to move up to the next level, the buzz about the Norskies was good to hear.”

The Norskies are all about development and this past weekend the Norskies had multiple players attend the Fargo Force USHL prospect camp.

“We are excited for Blair Lindholm, Logan Jackson and Cameron Jones to have an opportunity like this. We are a proud organization in only our second season,” said GM Kevin McCallum. “Congratulations to Cameron Jones on making it to the main camp for a shot at making the team at the end of the 3 days.”

So what’s next for the Norskies in this busy off season?  The 2017 prospect camp takes place at the Huck Olson Arena on June 23-25.  This camp will not only allow the coaching staff a chance to pick guys for this years’ team, but also allow young talent to participate to get their foot in the door of junior hockey. For the returning players coach Workman is excited for the upcoming season.

“The boys now know the league they know the players and have created some fun rivalries within.  It will be good to see how we respond to certain teams on the road and continue to build success at home. Our fans at home helped us be successful there and we are ecstatic for the puck drop on opening night at the “Mini-Ralph” for the 2017-2018 Norskies season.”
